If you’re looking for the best AM3+ motherboard with lower price, the GA-990FXA-UD3 could be the perfect answer to your needs. This board is almost the same as the GA-990FXA-UD5, they share the same features with only few differences. Gigabyte remove some of its ports for one reason, to become even more affordable to anyone who plans to build a powerful AM3+ computer rig without overspending. Even though it comes in a very attractive price, we can be sure its toughness when it comes to its performance. This is the reason why it becomes the best selling AM3+ motherboard in a very short time.

The looks

The GA-990FXA-UD3 looks very good in all black design, the CPU socket also in black that provides a descent space for the CPU heatsink. The 4 x DIMM slot also in all black color with proper spacing that doesn’t touch the GPU when installed. All 4 x PCI-E 2.0 slots are also comes in black including the 2 x PCI-E 1x and a single PCI. Heatsinks for the northbridge and southbridge chipsets including the MOSFET’s are in charcoal gray color with beefed sized enough to withstand tremendous heat when overclocked. It Provides 6 x SATA slots in right angle position located on the board edge for fast access. Overall, this board has an excellent cool looking design.

Connectivity

This board supports the Dual Channel DDR3 2000+ MHz up to 32GB of memory.  It provides 4 x PCI-E 2.0, the two can be run at x16 and the other two is at x4 configurations. This also includes the 2 x PCI-E x1 and 1 x PCI. Maximizing all the storage speed using 6 x SATA 6GB/s, forget the older 3GB/s. After nailing for quite some time in CrossfireX, the GA-990FXA-UD3 breaks the barrier between the NVidia’s SLI and Radeon CrossfireX multi GPU by offering the support for both, to have more freedom to choose your preferred one.

The GA-990FXA-UD3 totally outnumbered most previous motherboard by giving you a total of 18 USB ports, 14 of these are in 2.0 and 4 in 3.0. 8 x USB 2.0 are provided on the back panel including 2 x eSATA/USB combo connectors and 6 x ports trough headers. 2 x USB 3.0 are available at the back panel and 2 x port via headers. This also includes the 2 x Firewire 1394a which is readily available at the back panel that supports SATA 3GB/s.

Features

The GA-990FXA-UD3 belongs to the Ultra Durable 3 series motherboard which is the most distinguished features here. This is the Gigabyte’s tough quality board that includes a 2 ounces of copper design for power and ground layers for lower system temperature, this produce a high efficient energy to withstand during overclock. This includes an all Japanese Capacitors for a longer lifespan for more than 50,000 hours of usage.

BIOS setup always cause pain for novice enthusiast using the traditional keyboard control. Some EFI BIOS motherboard uses mouse to navigate to make it easier but, Gigabyte engineers creates the simplest way by introducing the touch BIOS. Using your touch screen monitor, you can simply point your finger onscreen to select the desired settings.  

With the Hybrid EFI technology, Gigabyte introduces the DualBIOS that uses two physical BIOS chipset. The second BIOS serves as a backup in case the main BIOS, this automatically recover all your data settings. In the new EFI BIOS, this fully support more than 2.2TB hard drive for a fast growing demands for a larger disk space. You can now install more than 3TB HDD that can easily detect and can be use as your boot drive without the need for partitioning.

Some of its features are seen on Gigabyte’s previous motherboard such as the On/Off charge technology, this allows you to charge faster with your iPhone, iPad and iPod even your PC is off. This will give you a boost with 3x faster charging than the regular USB ports.

The Easy Tune6 is the easiest way to overclock in the safest speed it can achieved. This is great for novice user or if you don’t want to go on sweat, with a single push of a button you get an instant overclock that boosts your performance in no time. Easy Energy Saver animatedly adjusts the CPU power consumption according to its workload, this will saves you power while giving the maximum efficiency. 

The 108 signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) playback eliminates the sound noise to deliver the highest audio quality for multi-channel HD. This also includes the Dolby Theater Support thus creating the best surround sound for you to enjoy when playing games, watching movies and listening to your favorite MP3’s.  

Final thoughts and Conclusion

Although we don’t have yet an actual hand on test with the GA-990FXA-UD3, this board is almost identical with GA-990FXA-UD5. You can read the full GA-990FXA-UD5 review here to learn more. They have only two minor differences, first is the number of PCI-E slots, the UD5 has 5 while the UD3 has 4. Second is the number of SATA ports, UD3 has lesser with only 6 SATA III ports that supports 6GB/s without any 3GB/s and the UD5 has 8. The rest are all the same and for sure their performances.

The GA-990FXA-UD3 is loaded with features that every enthusiast will be happy for it, you can never be short with its overloaded ports. Tweaking this board is joyful with less pain when doing manual overclocking, by simply bringing up the multiplier and a small increment on the voltage will do.  

Novice user no need to afraid of due to its handiness, with the introduction of the touch BIOS for easy CMOS settings and the Easy Tune 6 for effortless one click overclock, with this you get a healthy dose of speed boost. Just don’t forget to upgrade the CPU cooler.  

Socket AM3+ that runs in 990FX chipset is a wise choice over the previous 890FX that supports only AM3 processors. You got nothing to worry here because it’s a backward compatible with Athlon, Phenom and even those Sempron processors. With almost the same price as the 890FX boards, you can now enjoy the SLI graphics if you’re NVidia fans, this gives you a more freedom of choice that adds more flavor on your gaming experience. A faster transfer speed with 6.4GT/s is a guaranteed speed up in the HyperTransport in contrast with the 5.2GT/s that can be found on those AM3 boards.

In the absence of the Zambezi processor, we can now clearly see the advantages of the new GA-990FXA-UD3 socket AM3+ motherboard from Gigabyte. If you don’t have any usage for those extra SATA ports and PCI-E slot, however, running two GPU are most commonly used, this board is definitely the smartest choice. With the same goodness you can get compare with the UD5 version, save your $30 and get this great board.
